Organic Snob Food

Biotech versus Organic

Biotech versus Organic

Organic fruits and vegetables have become the designer food for the second half of this decade. Much the same way as bottled water captured the pocketbooks of people during the first half.

What did we learn about bottled water? It’s pretty much the same as what comes out of our taps – sometimes it IS the same.

Ok, so the same is true with Organic produce.

Although many of the marketers at Whole Foods and other purveyors of this nonesense wouldn’t want to admit it, Organic foods have the same (or sometimes worse) health benefits as non-organic.

The only thing we really get for paying three times as much is the self-satisfaction that we’re buying snob food that poor people can’t afford.

For backup, take a look at this video by the International Food Information Council (IFIC): http://www.monsanto.com/biotech-gmo/asp/guests.asp?id=WhatsForLunch

It is a funny look at the way most people really have no idea what they are buying when they buy Organic

Standing Up to OPEC

It isn’t very difficult to understand why OPEC is against Ethanol. After all, they don’t get to continue to get $140 per barrel oil, if we can replace a significant portion of our energy from domestic sources.

I am so happy to see that oil prices have come down in the last week. Now, we need to throw our support behind World BioFuels Industry. They published a letter in the Financial Times to OPEC refuting the claims that the Cartel was making that Ethanol and other biofuels are raising the price of gas.

MTBE … What’s that?

Did you know there are cancer-causing additives in our gasoline? That they were put there to increase octane, and “clean” up the environment?

Me neither.

I didn’t know that until I read this article by DarkPalmer: http://darkpalmer.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/the-case-for-ethanol/

Turns out, Ethanol is an environmentally-friendly way to increase the octane of the gas you put in your current car (it doesn’t have to be an e85 vehicle). It makes the gas burn more cleanly, and it won’t poison ground water.

They are collecting names on a petition if you’d like to get involved: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/declare-july-4th-energy-independence-day

Also you can get more info on Ethanol at www.drivingethanol.org.

InBev Getting Hostile!

InBev getting hostile  with Anheuser-Busch is kindof like me getting roughed up by Halle Berry. I would resist because its part of the little game, but we all know where things are going to end up.

Here’s a link to the story: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/2409d0a4-43c2-11dd-842e-0000779fd2ac.html

I mean, let’s see, the company that makes arguably the best beers in the world (Stella, Hoegaarden, Staropramen, Murphy’s, St. Pauli Girl, etc.) is going to take over the one company that is probably most responsible for crappy tasting american beer, and we’re supposed to be upset about it?

You have to figure it will only mean that beer in the United States will get better. The beer lobby will stop trying to limit the alcohol content in beer to keep foreign competition out. They will start using better ingredients (less corn, more malt). And let’s talk about prices…

Do you realize how much cheaper beer is in Belgium (that’s where InBev is headquartered) than in the United States? No kidding, you can get a Duval in a bar for about one Euro (so that’s about $1.50). That same beer here in the States would cost you probably $6.00, and that’s IF you can find a bar that even carries it.

Of course most of the cost of alcohol in the U.S. is taxes. When you see your Congressman, be sure to tell him “thanks”.

The reason the Duval isn’t in the bar is because of … wait. Could it be Anheuser-Busch intimidating the bars into only carrying their products? Say it ain’t so…

Me? I say, let it happen. I mean, it ain’t going to make the beer any worse.
